K ø u p l e s : Three lyrical short-operas sung in english, german and Italian 

 

 

In a ludicrous lyrical trilogy about conjugal life, the production deals with the risks and the erosion of the ‘he-she’ relation when submitted to an all pervading consumerism.The themes, definitely contemporary ones, will be set in a colourful decor inspired by the 70’s, it aesthetics drawn from the cosmic worlds devised by Cardin, Courrèges and Paco Rabanne, knocked about by original interludes by Alexandros Markéas and videos by Charles Carcopino.

 

The Telephon by American composer Gian Carlo Menotti, Hin und Zurück by German composer Paul Hindemith, Italian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’sIl segretto di  Suzanna: three works, sung in their original language, share a common distanced rereading of the great classic pieces of the opera and the theatre.

To deal with these mini-operas, Stephan Grögler chose the time period when artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein questioned the American dream confronted with the consumer society by glorifying tinned food and superb firings. Distancing himself from the original traditions by the stylized aesthetics of the visual dimension, he thus counterbalances the wild lyricism of the composers.

 

Kouples is conceived as a whirl, a parodic farce of the great lyrical dramas of the 19th century. Like a game of table-tennis, images, sounds, musique and films meet in a dense dialogue. The rhythm of the images echoes the music’s liveliness, the diversity of colours mirrors that of sounds and noise effects. The dynamic rhythm of the production originates in the dialogue between the auditive and the visual.
